The search began late November 2004, I must admit we were lackadiscal about it, but we (hubby and i) knew that we wanted a piece of the rock in our beloved Bimshire (Barbados).
In this blog, we will share our experiences (both joyful and stressful), whilst completing our house.
It has taken some fussing, research and resilience to decide on building a property in Barbados. Between November/December 2007 we started searching for Land (see section- on useful resources)
We set our eyes on the West Coast in the Parish of St Peter, Speightstown was our ideal location, however we knew that flexibility was key, especially if we wanted to stay within our budget of BDS$ 300,000).
We went to Barbados for our christmas vacation and our main objective was to find a suitable lot. With only 3 weeks stay we set out almost everyday to view land across the island.
Towards the end of the trip, we narrowed our options to 3 lots, one in St George, St Peter and another in St James. After further analysis (i.e weighing which is most suitable as an investment /holiday home), we decided the St Peter one was ideal.
Excited that we had come to a decision on which land we wanted, we made an offer, and unfortunately it was rejected. The land had just come on the market and the seller was a bit optimistic ($60 per sq/ft and not even next to the beach!!!!).
With our dampened eyes, we decided to continue our quest with our hearts set on the neighborhood of the lot in St Peter we had made an offer on. Off we went, calling more agents and luckily there were a couple of lots for sale in that area.
We eventually found and made an offer on a piece of land and it was accepted. Yippee Ya.
Well not quite, but we were thoroughly excited, we were well aware that this was just the very beginning of a long journey we were about to embark on.
Next step?
Obtaining a loan from the bank, carrying out a valuation and contacting our lawyer.
These processes took longer han expected, since our base is outside of Barbados. It was until April 2008, that we were able to sign the sales of agreement and also the finance agreement from the Bank.
As of to date, the completion date has been set for end of June 2008, we are sooo sooooo excited. I can already see the house!!!
